Rob Parkins

Pro Since: Sept 2006

Currently living at the base of the Grand Tetons, we first met Rob when he was gracious enough to represent our line in New England. We were smaller then, but Rob saw potential in our products - especially the Aluminum Lippa4Life. He knew they would make controlling saltwater species like Blues, Stripers, Redfish, and Sea Trout much much easier. He was right, and that has been proven over the last 4 years. Granted, he likes the new 3/4" thick full 3-D machined Lippas more than the first version (1/4" 2-D, external spring).. But as we always tell him, have to start somewhere buddy.

Product History

Design Evolution of Lipp4Life

improving the release experience

2004: original design: 2-D 1/4" Aluminum, external spring, custom threaded fastener, 1/8" Jaw Gap

2005: Stainless Steel version, external spring, 1/8" gap in Jaw

2006: 2-D Aluminum & Stainless

2007: 3-D 3/8" Aluminum with custom designed internal spring and stainless fastenerdemo

2008: Injection Molded design replaces stainless steel - Special Blend - incorporates internal spring and fastener from revised Aluminum model

2009-2010: Aluminum & Special Blend Lippa4Life models remain unchanged and excellent !

Proper Use

The Head Shake

The most unnerving aspect of "lipping" fish is at the initial point of contact IF the fish thrashes its head side to side. This doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it can be a little stressful. Some anglers panic and let go of the lippa altogether, others squeeze the handles harder, and some just jump back. The best method is to maintain pressure on the handles and push the fish entirely underwater until it chills out. Once the fish gets over the initial freak out and realizes something is holding it in the water, and not wanting to lift it out of the water they seem to relax. It is at this time when it is easy to remove the hook, and then simply release pressure on the Lippas to let the fish swim away - never having been out of the water!

Lippa4Life - Aluminum

Machined perfection - maximum control

Machined Aluminum is the coolest. Especially when the machining produces our Lippa4Life - the gentle 3/32 radius rounded edges, the oversized cylindrical tip, the recessed leash hole and fly tightening area, the arced groove for the internal spring, well you get the idea. This is our premium Lippa4Life, it is more rigid for nearly the same weight as the Special Blend version and it is the one favored by Anglers chasing bigger fish in fresh and salt water.

The lipp4life is designed to hold fish horizontally in the water for an in-water release. It works by holding the lower jaw of the fish, and we machine the arms to ensure there is a 1/8" gap when they are fully closed. This gap prevents puncturing the skin around the jaw bone, but does not detract from your ability to control the fish as is shown in the pictures below.

Hey Dylan,
Jared Ehlers from The Fly Fishers in Milwaukee, WI. Got a chance to use our Lippa4Life on sheefish while up in Alaska guiding for the summer. Sheefish are a pretty rare fish (only something like 6 watersheds in the world have them) and I'm sure this might be the only one you've seen so far with a Lippa on one! It worked awesome with them, they're hard to get a hold of and thumbing them like a bass is sketchy because their mouths are so soft - the Lippa4Life had the perfect tolerance to not punch holes and still hold on to them. The hat you sent me worked great during those cold Alaskan summer days, too. Thanks, Dylan!
